Google launches free offline AI dictation app

The 30 second story

Google has quietly released a free AI dictation app called AI Edge Eloquent on iOS, with no announcement and no press event. The app transcribes speech in real time and automatically cleans up the output — removing filler words, false starts, and mid-sentence corrections — so what ends up on the clipboard is polished, readable text. It runs entirely on-device using Google’s own Gemma speech models, meaning audio never leaves the phone when offline mode is enabled. An optional Gemini cloud mode handles more advanced text polishing for those who want it. There is no subscription, no usage cap, and no cost. A custom dictionary lets users add names and industry jargon, and signing in with a Google account can import frequently used terms from Gmail. Android is listed as coming soon.

Why it matters

Most business dictation tools either cost a monthly fee, require a reliable internet connection, or produce raw transcripts that still need heavy editing. AI Edge Eloquent removes all three barriers at once. The on-device processing is the significant detail: audio stays local, which matters for anyone dictating sensitive client information, financial data, or internal notes. The automatic clean-up means the output is usable immediately rather than a rough first pass. For small business owners who find typing slow or who spend time on the move, this could meaningfully speed up email replies, meeting notes, and document drafts at zero ongoing cost.

Free, offline AI dictation that produces clean text — no subscription, no server, no editing.

What this means for your business

  • Dictating emails, notes, and reports becomes faster without paying for a transcription service or cleaning up messy output afterwards
  • Sensitive conversations stay on-device, which matters for client calls, financial discussions, and anything you would not want processed on a third-party server
  • Staff who find typing slow or who work on the move can produce written communication at the same speed as those who do not
